Takeaways from this year’s E3 2018 Gaming Expo

By Nick Licouris

With one of the biggest annual video gaming expos, E3, coming to an end earlier this month, it’s clear that the video gaming world is more vibrant than ever and continuing to innovate. According to vg247.com, the event, held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, drew over 69,200 people that included 200 exhibitors who showcased 3,125 gaming products which made E3 2018 the largest expo since 2005. I was fortunate enough to attend this year’s event to check out firsthand the growth of this industry and the buzz around the top games in the world. Here are a few companies that stood while I was there:

Nintendo:
Nintendo had a huge expo space featuring its newest hit console: The Switch. It’s safe to say everyone is excited for Smash Bros Ultimate, a fighting game that will include 75 stages with the ability to play every character is its 20-year history. This will be the biggest Smash game ever made. Not only was the buzz around Smash but one of the biggest game in the world is coming to the Switch. Epic Games officially announced you will be able to download Fortnite on your Switch console. There was over 2million downloads in the first 24 hours.

Activision:
Talk about very long lines to test out games! The Activision booth featured its newest game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, which will be released later this year in October. The lines were hours long with people waiting to get a first look at the game play of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 which will feature its first Battle Royale mode, Blackout. Not only was this line extremely long, the line for Destiny 2 Forsaken was just the same. Activision yet again shows us why they continue to be one of the leaders in the gaming industry.

Microsoft:
There are some big transitions happening in Microsoft’s gaming division with the announcement of the purchasing of 4 gaming studios and creating one of their own studios right here in Santa Monica, The Initiative. This is a clear sign that Microsoft is taking video games seriously and looking to expand their foothold in this industry through investment and innovation. On the game side of things, Xbox players can look forward Halo Infinite, the newest Halo game of its franchise since Halo 5 released in 2015. Also, Microsoft announced 3 games tied to their “Gears of War” franchise including a mobile game called Gear Pop.

Epic Games:
Last but not least, one of the hottest games out there right now by Epic Games, Fortnite which brought in a record $318 million in May according to SuperData, was a big hit at E3. Although there was not much in new announcements from Epic besides the release of Fortnite on Nintendo Switch. They held a live 100-person tournament with 50 celebrities and 50 professional streamers teaming up for charity. The tournament’s charity prize pool for was $3 million.

All in all, E3 2018 was a huge success for the participating companies and the gaming world. With Gerber Kawasaki being in the heart of Santa Monica’s “Silicon Beach” and down the street from of the biggest gaming companies in the world, Activision, we have many clients in this industry that we help every day with their finances and I’m proud of the things they have accomplished and excited for what is yet to come. Until next year, E3!
